HGF Human Gingiva Fibroblasts

Biopsies from Human Gingiva, the outer layer of the oral cavity, can be harvested during oral surgery. Being a major constituent of gingival connective tissue, Human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) provide the epithelial part of the periodontium.

As recent studies have revealed, HGFs seem to play an active role in periodontal inflammatory response and host defense mechanisms besides immunecompetent cells from the Hematopoietic system. Upon stimulation with bacterial pathogens and their products, as well as with cytokines, HGFs secrete various soluble mediators of inflammation such as IFN-gamma, PGE2, IL-1, IL-6, and IL-8 and up-regulate the expression of HLA-DR and ICAM-1.

DPSC Human Dental Pulp Stem Cells

Dental pulp tissue is taken from molars/ wisdom teeth with unfinished root growth of young adults (between 15 to 30 years of age).

Within this material one can find gelatinous connective tissue - fibroblasts, odontoblasts, capillaries, neuronal tissue, immune competent cells and so-called DPSC - dental pulp stem cells.
Dental pulp stem cells can regenerate new stem cells or transform into
1. Odontoblasts (producing dentin)
2. Osteoblasts (producing alveolar bone)
3. Chondrocytes (producing cartilage)
4. Endothelial cells of blood vessels
5. Neuronal cells
6. Fat cells
The transformation potential of DPSCs in vitro is limited.
Odontoblasts have the capacity to produce so called tertiary dentin, which is used therapeutically in clinical interventions such as the excavation of caries in deep pulp near cavities.
